The Palomino Motel is a historic, mid-century roadside motel located in Tucumcari, New Mexico, a town known for its classic Route 66 architecture. While it has aged, the motel is still operating and provides a nostalgic glimpse into the golden era of American car culture.

Key features of the Palomino Motel:

Iconic neon sign: The motel is easily identified by its distinctive and still-operating neon sign, which features a sweeping arrow filled with about 150 light bulbs.

U-shape design: It was built in 1953 with 20 guest rooms in a U-shaped building, with the motel office at the front. This was a common design for motels of the period, allowing guests to park directly in front of their rooms.

Converted garages: When it was first built, the Palomino featured attached garages. These were later converted into 10 additional guest rooms, likely sometime in the 1960s.

Classic atmosphere: Many travelers stay at the Palomino specifically to experience the nostalgic Route 66 atmosphere. While the rooms may be "old school" and somewhat worn, reviews praise the affordability and friendly, down-to-earth hospitality.

Nearby attractions: Located on Route 66 Boulevard, it is within walking distance of other local attractions, including the restaurant Kix on 66.

The motel has been featured in a variety of media over the years, most recently appearing in a music video by the band Hurray for the Riff Raff.
